Missions Memo GREAT NEWS!! Last month, Fawn Church saved at least 31 lives!! How did we do that? By collecting $316.50 to buy nets for people in Africa to protect them from malaria-carrying mosquitoes. At least $10 per net, some large enough for 3-4 people to sleep under, we provided 31 nets, meaning 31 people or more no longer have to worry about being infected with this disease. The $316 collection raises our MISSION RECEIPTS FOR THE YEAR to $4,895.59, and puts us right on target to again reaching our goal for the year of $12,000. During the months of May and June we'll focus on the continent of AUSTRALIA as we continue on our WALK AROUND THE WORLD. Check the mission bulleting board, on the hallway wall just before you get to the mail boxes for some information on this "down under" land of kangaroos. But we're doing "mission work" right in our own back yard. You're probably not aware of it, but a lot of DELTA residents live at or below the poverty level. As a result of the efforts of some Delta-area clergy and lay people, new projects have been started. There's an AFTER-SCHOOL KIDS CLUB that meetts once a week and provides a place for children to do homework, listen to a Bible lesson, and have a light supper. In January, Fawn Church gave some money from last year's mission funds to support this program. And THERE'S MORE!!! One Sunday evening a month, an area church provides SUPPER for any Delta-area residents, at no charge. The number of persons showing up for this meal close to doubles each month. The Fawn youth, Mission committee, and other provided and served the meal on May 23. Plus we got to sit with and talk with these "neighbors," reminding them that it's THROUGH OUR LOVE FOR CHRIST that we reach out to others in his name. Thanks to so many of you who contributed items for the meal. At these meals, personal care items are given to those who need them. Enough churches are now participating so that, unless the program expands to more than once a month, each church will be responsible for just one Sunday a year. Many of us buy our children NEW CLOTHES to start the school year. Often forgotten in these purchases (especially for those families with limited financial resources) are the UNSEEN CLOTHES - you know, UNDERWEAR. Lots of children to to wear worn-out, wrong-sized, uncomfortable "undies" because parents can't afford new. So . . . the Mission Committee wants to take care of that need as well. That's why we've scheduled UNDIES SUNDAY FOR JUNE 13. Here's what you can do. Bring BRAND NEW (not used) boy's and girl's underwear, sizes S, M, L, and socks to church on June 13 AND 20, and we'll deliver these items to Mason Dixon to be distributed by them to area families late in the summer. |
